Getting a reaction in close-up
Article Abstract:
Mark Wightman and colleagues obtained a statistical distribution of varying reaction times for individual molecules during a chemical reaction. Using a 10-micron-diameter electrode, they generated positive and negative ions of DPA and tracked the photon flashes from individual reactions.

Researchers construct cell look-alikes
Article Abstract:
Univ of California-Santa Barbara researchers have coaxed lipid molecules into cell-like structures, consisting of lipid membranes encasing several spherical vesicles. Application could include drug-delivery devices. THe synthesis methodology is described.

Rock chemistry traces ancient traders
Article Abstract:
A chemical analysis of volcanic glass particles indicates that long-distance sea trading on the South Pacific dates back to 4000 BC, 2,500 years earlier that previous estimates. The analysis links glass found on Borneo to islands 3,500 kilometers away.
