Getting wired: new observations may show how neurons form connections

An experiment at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory reveals how neurons form synapses. Mirjana Maletic-Savatic and her colleagues used a new microscopic technique to observe electrically stimulated neurons in living rat brain, and discovered that neuronal dendrites formed countless microscopic fingerlike projections called filopodia.

The US Department of Agriculture has proposed to study the DNA of plants, animals and microbes, and enhance the purpose of some useful species. The $200-mil proposal, known as National Food Genome Strategy, appears to be gaining strong support from the Congress.
