Gypsum and other calcium-rich aerosol particles above the North Sea
Article Abstract:
A study of the North Sea atmosphere was conducted to identify the different Ca-containing particle types and to determine the relationship between their occurrence and the source regions of the corresponding air masses. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis was undertaken to examine the composition of some 50,000 aerosol samples colleted above the Southern Bight of the North Sea. Nonhierarchical cluster analysis was conducted to identify the different types, their abundances and their sources. CaSO4 is the most abundant type of Ca-containing particles. A large fraction comes from anthropogenic sources in central Germany, with extremely large amounts of CaSO4 particles found in northeastern winds coming from this region.

Laser desorption/ionization of single ultrafine multicomponent aerosols
Article Abstract:
Laser desorption/ionization experiments on single ultrafine multicomponent aerosols reveal that free electrons dominate the negative ion spectra and that ion yield-to-mass ratio is higher for ultrafine than large particles. KCl/NaCl and NaCl/NH4NO3 experiments show that total composition may be inferred from measurements in peak area ratios and that ion yields also vary and may thus complicating multicomponent analysis.
