Health of a continent
Article Abstract:
The fundamental environmental issues confronting Europe are contained in a landmark 676-page report on the region's environment. Entitled 'Europe's Environment: The Dobris Assessment,' the study is the most comprehensive assessment of Europe's environment, revealing serious environmental degradation in several countries. Aside from isolating the problems that threaten to further destroy Europe's environment, the report also includes responses and policy options for the region's 46 countries. Major findings include the worsening urban air quality, river and lake eutrophication, soil erosion, landscape changes, dwindling forest cover and traffic flows.

United Kingdom to set air quality emission standards
Article Abstract:
UK Environment Sec. John Gummer announced plans to develop legislation on the regulation of eight pollutants by April 1997. In line with this goal, the government has launched a national air quality strategy that includes identifying air pollution hot spots and establishing emission targets for nitrogen dioxide, particulates, ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, lead, benzene and 1,3-butadiene. The strategy also includes proposals on the use of newly available control technologies to achieve reductions in sulfur dioxide and other industrial emissions.

Europe to target vehicle emissions in new air quality strategies
Article Abstract:
Stricter vehicle emission standards for the year 2000 and the implementation of directives on fuels are among the top priorities in air quality management of the European Commission. Standards on particulates, nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons will be proposed in Jul. 1996, as are controls on fuel quality. Among proposals for fuel quality are a ban on leaded gasoline, limits for olefins, aromatics and benzene and restrictions on sulfur content.
