Heavy metal meets its match: two new materials strip pollutants from toxic wastes

Research into the potential of stable mesoporous silica as a viable waste-site remediation technology has gone into two directions, both of which offers selective uptake of pollutants. One involves the use of sulphur compounds that take in mercury, silver and lead, while another used biological molecules for the controlled release of pesticides.

Computer scientist Raman, who became blind at age 14, designed software for blind computer users after discovering that his speech synthesizer was ineffective at reading mathematical expressions. His programming language controls how the synthesizer speaks various phrases and texts.
