Heredity made to order: directed mutations
Article Abstract:
John Cairns, Julie Overbaugh and Stephan Miller of the Harvard School of Public Health theorized that bacteria may choose the mutations they should produce as a response to their current needs. This view challenges the traditional belief that mutation and selection are mutually independent. Cairns and his colleagues, as a result, have been criticized for not considering simpler alternatives to directed mutation, such as the presence of replication-dependent, spontaneous mutants. They have also been criticized for using deviations from Luria-Delbruck for mutations with Poisson distributions.

Research community swats grasshopper control trial
Article Abstract:
Two proposed methods for controlling grasshopper population explosions in Western US grazing land have been delayed, due to concerns about the effects of the methods on beneficial and non-target insect species. The two methods involve predator wasps and parasitic fungus, both imported from Australia.

Drugs and people threaten diversity in Andean forests
Article Abstract:
A scientific symposium was held at the New York Botanical Garden to discuss the future of the montane forests, which stretch from Venezuela to Argentina and contain as much biological diversity as the Amazon rain forests.
