House saves, then kills, then saves OTA

Rep Amo Houghton won support on the House floor to preserve the OTA, after an appropriations committee had targeted it for closure. The small agency, which provides independent oversight of new technologies, will become a part of the Congressional Research Service, with a reduced budget of $15 million.

House panel cuts industry programs

House Republican have cut the $609 million previously approved for TRP and ATP, two industrial technology programs that would increase cooperation between industry and academic scientists. Supporters hope the Senate will be more open to evaluating the merits of the programs.
