How quasars make heavy metal

Astrophysicists led by Pawel Artymowicz have introduced a new theory to explain how quasars formed the high concentrations of heavy metals that they contain. The researchers suggest that the metals came from stars in the quasars' 'accretion disks.'

New research suggests that millisecond pulsars may form not only out of resurrected normal pulsars, but may also be created when white dwarfs collapse after collecting mass from nearby stars. Analysis of both theories is presented.
