Researchers have identified a group of proteins that may enable malaria parasites to breach human immune defenses. The malaria parasite avoids detection by switching among as many as 150 P. falciparum var genes, each of which encodes a different version of erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (EMP-1).

Proposals to provide women in developing countries emergency curative services could reduce complications of pregnancy and birth, which kill half a million women in developing nations each year. Providing emergency medical care rather than preventative services is controversial.

The FDA has asked a Univ of California-San Francisco team to apply for Investigational New Drug Approval for the proposed transplantation of baboon bone marrow to a human AIDS patient, fearing possible spread of animal viruses to humans. AIDS activists protested the decision.
