Impact of several water-miscible organic solvents on sorption of benzoic acid by soil
Article Abstract:
Sorption of benzoic acid by a surface soil was studied to investigate whether the previously observed enhanced sorption of carboxylic acids was specific to methanol. A cosolvency model which included speciation of the organic acid as determined by the conditional ionization constant and soil-solution pH was used to assess sorption data. Reasonable predictions of sorption trends observed from acetone/water, acetonitrile/water and 1,4-dioxane/water solutions were derived. However, the model cannot adequately predict enhanced sorption observed from DMSO/water solutions, suggesting that the same mechanisms control benzoic acid sorption from methanol and DMSO.

Equilibrium partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from coal tar into water
Article Abstract:
The measurement of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons partitioned from eight coal tar samples from manufactured gas plants (MGPs) into water is discussed. Raoult's law convention for activity coefficients and hypothetical supercooled liquid solubilities were used to evaluate the measured partition coefficients. Results indicate that solubility primarily determined the release of PAH from coal tar disposed at MGP sites.

Partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from diesel fuels into water
Article Abstract:
The calculation of nonidealities resulting from the interactions between components in the diesel fuel are discussed. The UNIFAC functional group activity coefficient model was used to partition eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the results of which were compared to observed diesel-water partition coefficients. General agreement between the two methods was demonstrated.
