Indoor chemistry: ozone, volatile organic compounds, and carpets
Article Abstract:
The possibility of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) levels being affected by an ozone and nitrogen dioxide mixture (O3/NO2) is discussed. These reactions were examined by subjecting new carpets in a stainless-steel room to ozone and O3/NO2. A UV photometric ozone analyzer was utilized in the thermal desorption procedure of the analytical measurements. Differences in measurement was found to exist between VOCs at elevated ozone levels and VOCs at lower ozone levels.

Effect of ventilation and sampling time on environmental tobacco smoke component ratios
Article Abstract:
Research was done at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co on how ventilation rates and sampling durations affect the content of environmental tobacco smoke. Ventilation rates were varied from 0-4 air changes per hour. The duration of each air sampling was varied from 30-360 minutes. Since the ratio of nicotine to other smoke components varies widely, the use of nicotine only in assessing exposure levels could be highly inaccurate.

Multisorbent thermal desorption/gas chromatography/mass selective detection method for the determination of target volatile organic compounds in indoor air
Article Abstract:
The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR) has developed a thermal desorption/gas chromatography/mass selective detection method for determining levels of 28 volatile organic compounds, using Tenax and using 3-ethenylpyridine, a nicotine byproduct, as an indicator of environmental tobacco smoke. The results of field studies in four smoking and four nonsmoking households are provided in detail.
