Influence of axial stress and dilatancy on rock tunnel stability
Article Abstract:
The discusser has pointed out that the application of biaxial and sigma2-independent failure criteria for studying the effect of sigma2 is improper. However, the authors have assumed that the rock mass is either a Mohr-Coulomb type or a Hoek-Brown type material. Thus, sigma2 need not be equal to sigma3. Moreover, it has been shown that sigma2 can vary between sigma1 and sigma3. The use of such failure criteria is common in rock mechanics.

Study of rock fracture by permeability method
Article Abstract:
A paper on studying rock fracture using permeability measurements is evaluated. It is argued that the interpretation of permeability changes based on fracture mechanisms could vary depending on rock type. It is also shown that effective or gas-accessible porosity can be determined during triaxial compression tests via the gas expansion method for measuring porosity. The application of this method is discussed.

Influence of hammer type on SPT results
Article Abstract:
The energy difference in different standard penetration testing hammer/drop mechanisms was analyzed. Tests were conducted on safety, automatic and donut hammer systems in three adjacent boreholes at a medium dense uniform sandsite to demonstrate the problem. Results show the advantages of an automatic hammer system over rope, cathead, hydraulic spool and other hammer types.
