Isolation of soluble 99Tc as a compact solid using a recyclable, redox-active, metal-complex extractant
Article Abstract:
A novel method for the extraction and recovery of pertechnetate (TcO4-), which also occurs in the environment as soluble technetium-99 (99Tc), is discussed. The process involves the use of a recyclable, redox-active, metal-complex anion extractant, 1,1',3,3'-tetrakis(2-methyl-2-hexyl)ferrocene, which is recovered in its original form after the reaction. This extractant can recover TcO4- in the solid phase in small volume.

36Cl and 129I in the Yenisei, Kolyma, and Mackenzie rivers
Article Abstract:
Measurements of 129I and 36Cl concentrations in the Yenisei, Mackenzie and Kolyma rivers show that the Yenisei had much higher concentrations of 129I but that 36Cl concentrations were not significantly different than in other areas. Such measurements give an account of the amount of radioactive waste discharged by the former Soviet Union into the Arctic Ocean Basin.
