Article Abstract:
Gerard is one of the world's top experts on AIDS vaccines and chimpanzees. He and colleague Patricia Fultz successfully protected a chimpanzee with an HIV vaccine. Garard and Fultz discovered that the V3 loop raised the levels of antibodies that are critical in fighting HIV.

Goudsmit in a virologist from Amsterdam, Netherlands, known for his work on the structure and function of the the V3 loop, which comprises a portion of the protein that is attached to the HIV virus. His research efforts are briefly discussed.

Baltimore to head new vaccine panel

Retrovirologist David Baltimore will head an NIH Office of AIDS Research panel that will coordinate research on AIDS vaccine development. A review of NIH research on AIDS recommended restructuring the entire AIDS vaccine research program.
