Laying down the law
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Act (EPA) 1990 is beginning to impact the majority of industrial activity in the UK, and part 1 in particular, covering pollution control, will affected most major manufacturing companies. Integrated pollution control (IPC) aims to prevent or minimise the emission of proscribed substances, and will be enforced by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP). Concepts already introduced into IPC are Best Available Techniques Not Entailing Excessive Cost (BATNEEC) and Best Practical Environmental Option (BPEO).

A laying-off of hands
Article Abstract:
Lucas Engineering and Systems initiated a pan-European BRITE/EURAM project to enhance the automated production of pre-preg composite materials, by evaluating the feasibility of an integrated automatic manufacturing cell for complex composite parts. The project aims to incorporate in-process quality assurance in the production cycle, evolve a design support database system which focuses on production problems and cost drivers during the design cycle and reduce the time taken to market new products.

Remedial action
Article Abstract:
A UK legislation that makes land owners and polluters liable for any industrial activity or inadequate waste management practices causing ground and groundwater contamination has caused rising concern regarding the costs of remediation. To date, traditional approaches to solve this social problem are costly such as landfill disposal. However, the discovery of modern bioremediation techniques has given landowners a cost-effective solution to cleaning up polluted land.
