Life Sciences Win Bulk Of Cash Bonanza
Article Abstract:
The government of Great Britain has announced that it will give $1.1 billion in additional funds over three years to life science spending. The Medical Research Council, the Natural Environment Research Council and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council will benefit. Genetic research is where much of the funding is destined. Physical sciences also received some funding.

A plea to protect threatened collections
Article Abstract:
Economic pressures on government funding of natural history museums are threatening collections in many countries. Scientists at the Second World Congress on the Preservation and Conservation of Natural History Collections will try to set up a global organization to coordinate priorities.

Tobacco funding debate smolders
Article Abstract:
A controversy erupted in the UK medical research community when it was revealed that the Medical Research Council (MRC) had accepted a funding grant from a tobacco company. Both the MRC and the Cancer Research Campaign are reviewing policies on tobacco funding.
