Light touch
Article Abstract:
Scottish College of Textiles lecturer Sarah Taylor has devised a way to utilize optic fibers for making innovative fabrics. It is not sure whether her work will win in the Fifth International Competition in Kyoto, Japan, but her unique product has garnered the attention of a European firm which sees commercial possibilities for the fabric. The woven fabric is presently being used as a blanket material for babies born with jaundice. The fabric may also be used in disco houses and night clubs.

Reflections on infinity
Article Abstract:
Engineers are building the world's largest one-piece glass mirror to be installed in the Mount Graham Large Binocular Telescope. The mirror weighs 17 tons, measures 8.4 meters in diameter and is made from 18,821 kg of E6 borosilicate glass which has a small rate of expansion and contraction during temperature changes. The mirror will give the telescope a million times the light gathering power of human eyes for the exploration of planets and the solar system.
