A group of major steel companies are sponsoring a research program aimed at reducing the weight of automobile steel chassis by 30% to 40%. The program, called Partners for a New Generation Vehicle, evaluates the properties of other structural materials which can be use as a substitute to steel.

Direct-injection revival
Article Abstract:
Engines that directly inject fuel into the cylinders instead of injecting it upstream have been developed by Toyota and Mitsubishi. Better fuel efficiency is expected with the new engines. Direct injection developers find fuel variety in the US as a hindrance to this type of engine system.
