Liquefaction and residual strength of sands from drained triaxial tests
Article Abstract:
Authors G. Norris, R. Siddharthan, Z. Zafir and R. Madhu have proposed an interesting technique for evaluating whole, undrained stress-strain curve and undrained stress path for sand based on drained triaxial tests results in relation to the analysis of the liquefaction potential of loose sands. The authors, however, did not clearly elucidate one significant point, which is that the proposed interpolation method should also consider the comprehensive strains required to to derive the starting point of each subsequent drained stress-strain curve.

Liquefaction and residual strength of sands from drained triaxial tests
Article Abstract:
Authors G. Norris, R. Siddharthan, Z. Zafir, and R. Madhu have suggested the plausible use of drained triaxial compression test results to forecast the undrained triaxial compression behavior of sands. It should be pointed out, however, that a decrease in effective stress reduces mobilized shear strength and stiffness, both of which can produce postpeak softening of loose sand. In this context, the results of some special stress path tests are discussed to demonstrate that postpeak softening can be dominated by a reduction stiffness.

Liquefaction and residual strength of sands from drained triaxial tests
Article Abstract:
Authors Branko Ladanyi, Ron C.K. Wong and Marolo C. Alfaro have made very constructive comments and contributions. It should be pointed out that Ladanyi's effective stress path curve plots clearly show that the peak undrained resistance sigmaD = sigma1 - sigma3 occurs at a low value of mobilized friction. From the numbers shown, the horizontal axis is sigma'3. This leads to certain conclusions necessitating the consideration of consolidation rebound data. Ladanyi must clarify this point.
