Article Abstract:
Groundwater contaminated with volatile organic compounds was discovered in the downtown area in the city of Wichita, Kansas in the late 1980 where the contaminated groundwater extended beneath approximately 8,000 parcels of land, including more than 550 businesses presenting a threat to human health, the environment and the local economy. Efforts made by The Kansas Department of Health and Environment in discovering the contamination and the resulting environmental investigation and remediation project is discussed.

Article Abstract:
Trichloroethylene was often as part of food flavoring production and to clean equipment but was commonly flushed into sewer lines where it remained in dense non-aqueous-phase liquid form to contaminate land and water for over 20 years. Air injection and pneumatic fracturing can extract this material.
