Losing ground
Article Abstract:
A steel bridge has been designed and built in Leicester, New York, to replace a three-span, multigirder bridge that had partially collapsed due to subsidence. The bridge was built by engineers at LaBella Associates, Rochester, New York. It contains a single-span steel girder and expansion bearings with strip seal expansion joints. A permanent jacking platform is situated at the sight to accommodate settling movements due to further subsidence.

Outside the box
Article Abstract:
The design, fabrication, and construction of the first steel bridge in the United States utilizing 100 ksi (690 MPa) high performance steel (HPS) are described. HPS box girders in conjunction with a structural system in which the girders would function as simple spans for dead loads and as continuous spans for live loads and superimposed dead loads was found economical even for spans shorter than 250 ft (76 m).
