Through frozen ground
Article Abstract:
The South Boston Piers Transitway tunnel project will use the new Austrian tunneling method (NATM), selective underpinning and ground freezing approaches to prevent building damages that may occur during the construction process. It is a mile-long passageway that originates from the Central Artery Project Alignment at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Congress Street, passing under the Russia Wharf complex and Fort Point Channel, on its way to South Boston. It is considered as a test case that will determine the feasibility of the alternative tunneling methods.
