Maintaining a Nuclear Deterrent Under the Test Ban Treaty
Article Abstract:
The US is apprehensive about signing the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty banning all nuclear explosions because Congress needs assurances that the US' nuclear arsenal can be kept up to date. There exists, however, various other means of testing nuclear explosions that do not involve an actual explosion. Moreover, there are data from over 1000 explosions that can be used.

It is a commonly accepted view that the Earth's upper mantle has a mineral composition similar to chondrites. Japanese, German and American researchers have recently discovered high pressure forms of olivine and pyroxine in the lower mantle beneath the 660 kilometer seismic discontinuity.

A research report on magnesiowustite is criticized for not supporting the conclusion that the Earth's lower mantle is out of equilibrium with metallic iron, because of the variable composition of wustite. The original author defends her conclusions.
