Many suspects to blame in Madagascar extinctions
Article Abstract:
Scientists at a May 1995 meeting at the Field Museum in Chicago, IL, reported that the relatively recent extinction of many species of large animals on Madagascar had both natural and human-induced causes. Current species are only a sample of the past biodiversity of the island.

Fifty shades of forest green
Article Abstract:
Biologist Hanna Tuomisto and her colleagues have used satellite images and field studies to develop a map of the Peruvian Amazon that shows that the forest is far from homogenous. The map raises questions about how so many species arose and how they can be saved.

Mass job extinctions at L.A. museum
Article Abstract:
The Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History laid off 42 employees in Jan 1993 due to budget cuts, and more lay offs are expected. The museum houses important collections of fossil vertebrates and living marine invertebrates, fish and reptiles.
