Driving under a construction site
Article Abstract:
The traffic congestion at the intersection of Rosecrans Avenue and Aviation Boulevard in Hawthorne, CA, necessitated the construction of a facility that would ease the traffic load in the area during peak hours. The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission's proposed Metro Green Line light-rail transitsystem that would cross over the intersection diagonally provided a solution tothe problem. Cast-in-place concrete segmental design and a free cantilever method of construction allowed for minimum traffic disruption while providing ease of construction, good aesthetics and less cost.

Cap of concrete
Article Abstract:
A combination of steel and concrete was used in the roof construction of a sports arena in New Orleans, LA. The structural stability of the combined materials was expected to resemble a reinforced-concrete arch bridge and the primary design consideration was the tied-arch structural system. The design of the sports arena was jointly undertaken by the local architectural firms: Arthur Q. Davis and Partners, Billes-Manning Architects and Hewitt Washington and Associates. The general contractor was the joint venture, Manhatta/Gibbs.
