Mars meteorite quest goes global
Article Abstract:
British, Japanese and US research teams are striving to verify within two years the claim that a Martian meteorite found in Antarctica bears evidence of fossil life. In addition to current studies, NASA and NSF are offering $1 million each for new proposals. NASA also plans a joint Mars mission with Russia.

Ames tackles the riddle of life
Article Abstract:
The Ames Research Center will unveil its new Astrobiology Institute in April 1998. The center's initial budget of $4 million is expected to eventually reach $100 million. Numerous recent findings in astrobiology have reinvigorated a discipline that was not held in the highest esteem.

Tighter rules for sharing studied: Mars meteorites
Article Abstract:
NASA and the National Science Foundation are formulating strict rules for the sharing of pieces of the known Martian meteorites among researchers. Advisory panelists warned of the great possibility of contamination and recommended that every gram be accounted for.
