Risk-based remediation guidelines take hold. (American Society for Testing and Materials)
Article Abstract:
The American Society for Testing and Materials has released risk-based corrective action standards (RBCA) for sites of oil spills to reduce contamination of nearby sites and to achieve maximum cleanup. RBCA allows different cleanup levels for residential and industrial areas depending on the extent of the contamination and the urgency of cleanups. It is implemented in three levels: assessment of site conditions and the nature of the contamination; setting of site-specific remediation target levels using mathematical models and; a complete site assessment based on predicted attenuation of contaminants.

Value of ISO 14000 Management Systems put to the test
Article Abstract:
Ten states have agreed to participate in a pilot project to measure the economic and environmental benefits of the International Standards Organization ISO 14000 environmental management system. The projects will base judgments on management and environmental criteria which include emissions, quality issues, cost-benefits, ISO 9000 and Total Quality Management. The program involves regulators from the states of California, Arizona, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Wisconsin.

ISO 14000: a step toward industry self-regulation
Article Abstract:
Industries are anticipating that the International Organization of Standardization's new series of voluntary environmental management standards will pave the way for self-regulation. The new set of standards called ISO 14000 aims to make it easier for companies to monitor and measure their own environmental performance. However, US regulators are adopting a cautious stance regarding ISO 14000 and are awaiting the results of regulatory pilot projects that are using the standards.
