Materials research is the hottest field in science and technology today, and the US government has made it a priority. Prospective applications include fuel-efficient, clean automobiles; high-temperature alloys, superconducting magnets and thin films; synthetic diamonds; and solar and optical materials.

Renewable liquid fuels

Article Abstract:

More research and development on alternative liquid fuels is needed in the US to lower dependence on oil imports and to help reduce greenhouse gases. Current research on the production, costs, efficient use and environmental effects of ethyl alcohol and bio diesel fuels are discussed.
