Mathematics Gets Institutionalized--Again
Article Abstract:
The National Science Foundation has set plans to provide funds three mathematical institutes at University of California, Berkeley, University of Minnesota, and University of California, Los Angeles. The purpose behind this move is to allow mathematicians at smaller schools to keep up to date with the works done at mainstream schools.

Big bucks for new equipment
Article Abstract:
The Canadian government's 1997 budget allocates $1.5 billion towards upgrading scientific equipment at the nation's research universities. The Canada Foundation for Innovation will oversee the 5-year program. The new funds will help offset cuts to the three major research-granting councils.

Universities are having to so more on smaller budgets though they are already efficient at raising funds. Colleges need the dedication of their faculties, especially scientists, who usually concentrate their allegiance on their fields and international societies.
