Measurements of linear alkylbenzenes by GC/MS with interference from tetrapropylene-based alkylbenzenes: calculation of quantitation errors using a two-component model
Article Abstract:
A two-component model that calculates the quantitation error in measurements of linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) in the presence of tetrapropylene-based alkylbenzenes (TABs) is introduced. Using the gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method, a simple equation derived from the model can calculate the error with the knowledge of relative abundances of m/z 91 and m/z 119 in samples, LAB standards and TAB standards. The model's application to other two-component systems was demonstrated by using it on a sediment core collected in Santa Monica Bay near the Hyperion 7-mi. sludge outfall in Los Angeles, CA.

In situ measurements of chlorinated hydrocarbons in the water column off the Palos Verdes Peninsula, California
Article Abstract:
Prior to 1970, the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant operated by the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angels County discharged chemical plant waste water that was contaminated with DDT (and its primary metabolites) and PCBs. The study tested the water column and sediment for these contaminants. The goal of the study was to determine the amount of contamination. The study was able to show that contaminants are mainly confined to the sediment nearest the discharge site. With the exception of the discharge site, redeposition of contaminants was not significant.

Trace analysis of organobromine compounds in air by adsorbent trapping and capillary gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy
Article Abstract:
Adsorbent trapping and capillary gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) is used to preform trace analysis of organobromine compounds in air. The study sampled both land and seashore air. The system measures adsorption of selected organic compounds onto Tenax GC. The samples then undergo thermal desorption and analysis by GC/MS.
