Assessment of particulate concentrations from domestic biomass combustion in rural Mexico
Article Abstract:
Differences in indoor particle concentrations between kitchens using different fuels and types of stove were examined by measuring particulate concentrations in rural Mexican kitchens. Kitchens using only biomass, only liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a combination of biomass and LPG and biomass in ventilated stoves were investigated. Kitchens using only biomass had the greatest PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations than all other types. The same trend held true for the indoor/outdoor concentration ratio. PM10 and PM2.5 cooking period average and 5-minute peak concentrations were far higher in kitchens using only biomass than all other types.

Fires in Indonesia: crisis and reaction. Alarmed by fire and smoke pollution impacts, area nations are organizing to avoid another catastrophe
Article Abstract:
Member nations of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) have consolidated their scientific and information resources to form a 'fast response' program to forest fires that have regional environmental effects. The consolidation of resources is a response to the forest fires in Indonesia, which caused almost $4.4 bil in economic losses in the region due to the effect of the fires on the ecosystem and health effects. The consolidation of resources is meant to improve ASEAN's meteorological forecasting and mobilization to avert the occurence of such widespread forest fires.
