Mechanosensation and the DEG/ENaC ion channels
Article Abstract:
Genetic studies of the worm Caenorhabditis elegans indicate that a sodium channel may be the mechanism for the production of mechanosensation. Interaction of the channel with an extracellular matrix transforms mechanical stimuli into electrochemical signals.

The mechanism of transduction at a single-hair cell is identified using the extracellular linkages and sensory adaptation process. The cloning of deafness genes and hair-bundle antigens has given number of candidates.
