Metal leaching of fly ash from municipal waste incineration by Aspergillus niger
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of Aspergillus niger in removing fly ash from municipal waste incineration by biological leaching was investigated using batch experiments. A. niger exhibited increases in size and gluconate synthesis in the presence of fly ash, but produced citrate in the absence of fly ash. During bioleaching of 6% fly ash, cadmium, zinc, copper, lead, manganese and aluminum were leached in decreasing amounts, in that order. The results were almost the same with those obtained by chemical leaching, suggesting that A. niger is an efficient metal leaching agent.

Modeling arsenic and selenium leaching from acidic fly ash by sorption on iron (hydr)oxide in the fly ash matrix
Article Abstract:
Arsenic and Se sorption on amorphous iron (hydr)oxide in acidic fly ash is investigated to determine if this process can be used to control the leaching of these contaminants. The results showed that sorption on hydroxylamine-extractable iron (hydr)oxide controls the partitioning of arsenic and Se between acidic fly ash and leachate. The amount of arsenic and Se decreases at lower pH and oxyanions coprecipitate in this range.

Clay formation and metal fixation during weathering of coal fly ash
Article Abstract:
Coal fly ash and volcanic ash both contain a high level of aluminosilicate glass; however, coal fly ash rapidly forms clay and dissolutes glass, suggesting its negative environmental impact may be less than supposed.
