Microbial reduction of vitamin B12 by Shewanella alga strain BrY with subsequent transformation of carbon tetrachloride
Article Abstract:
The metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella alga strain BrY reduced vitamin B12a to vitamin B12r. Results indicate that the presence of BrY into the system caused the production of B12 whereas its absence yielded only vitamin B12a. The transformation of carbon tetrachloride(CT) and chloroform in batch systems containing vitamin B12, the BrY and an electron donor indicates that the bacterium hastens the reduction of vitamin B12 and aids in the transformation of CT.

Sequential environments for enhanced biotransformation of aqueous contaminants
Article Abstract:
The sequential exposure of microorganisms and biological transformation that occur in aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic environments are discussed. These sequential environments were used to design a single-sludge process. Hazardous waste, soil and groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents comprised their other possible applications. However, additional research are necessary before the full potential of sequential environments can be realized.

Methanethiol in nonacclimated sewage sludge after addition of chloroform and other toxicants
Article Abstract:
The effect of chloroform and other toxicants on the amount of methanethiol occurring in nonacclimated sewage sludge is investigated. The reslts showed that the mixture transformed CHCl3 and produced CH2Cl2, CH3Cl, CO2 and other unidentified volatile products. Degradation did not directly produce methanethiol although it was detected in response to toxicity. CH3SH was produced when the initial concentration of CHCl3 inhibited gas production.
