Mohawk environmental health project integrates research into the community
Article Abstract:
A study of polychlorinated biphenyls in breast milk funded by the National institute of Environmental Health Sciences has involved a 12,000-member Mohawk community living along the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada and New York. The Mohawks participated in conducting the research and designing the project. The breast milk contamination occurred as PCBs from three aluminum foundries leaked into the St. Lawrence and was ingested by fish, which is a major food source of the community. Mohawk midwife and clinical instructor Katsi Cook spearheaded efforts to involve the Native Americans.

White House panel creating database of endocrine disrupter-related research
Article Abstract:
Some 400 research projects on the impact of chemicals that disrupt endocrine systems in both humans and wildlife are hoped to help create a user-friendly database of endocrine-disrupter research. The database is aimed at aiding scientists in coordinating research on the endocrine-disrupting potential of 600 pesticides and 72,000 chemicals in commercial use. It will be created by a 26-member federal committee formed by the White House National Science and Technology Council, which is comprised of federal scientists.
