Waivers proposed for emergency studies
Article Abstract:
The Food and Drug Administration proposed on Sep 21, 1995, a rule that would make it easier for physicians to obtain waivers of informed consent to include in clinical trials patients in emergency situations. The Dept of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health are planning similar rules.

Patents on native technology challenged
Article Abstract:
Jeremy Rifkin plans a legal challenge to W.R. Grace & Co.'s patent on a method of extracting a natural pesticide called azadirachtin from the neem tree of India. Rifkin plans to broaden the issue to include all biological resources discovered by native peoples.

Biosphere 2 turned over to Columbia
Article Abstract:
Biosphere 2 has negotiated a 5-year agreement with Columbia University in an attempt to improve the scientific management of the enclosed ecological laboratory. Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory will take over control of research at the facility.
