Mountain sickness

Article Abstract:

High-altitude pulmonary edema and similar altitude-related illnesses are often preventable, although they can be lethal. Physiological effects of hypoxia are described, and information about the prevention and treatment of altitude-related illnesses is provided.

Mountain belts and the supercontinent cycle

Article Abstract:

The continents assemble into a single land-mass on Earth every 500 million years. The tectonic interactions associated with such super-continents show a new way to look at the origin of mountain belts. The last single land-mass occurred 180 million years ago.

Can nuclear waste be stored safely at Yucca Mountain; studies of the mountain's history and geology can contribute useful insights but not unequivocal conclusions

Article Abstract:

The US government has spent about $1.7 million on studies to determine whether it is safe to store nuclear waste in caverns below Yucca Mountain, which lies in southern Nevada. The conclusions of the research are discussed.
