Article Abstract:
The Royal Mail is now using a new sorting technology in the form of the Integrated Mail Processor (IMP) which was completed in 1994. The machine was designed to integrate the entire sorting process, making work easier for Royal Mail employees and enabling the postal service to deliver 72 million letters a day. Loads of mail are tipped onto conveyor belts at one end and emerge in neatly stacked piles on the other end without being touched by human hands. The IMP can also decipher handwriting and can perform image scanning, letter straightening, and postmark printing at an incredible speed.
