Locate in Scotland (LiS) is part of the Scottish Enterprise and has attracted investment in Scotland worth 4.2 billion pounds sterling, since it started 10 years ago. Its new initiative aims to encourage investment in aircraft maintenance businesses as arond 10% of the working population in Scotland are in the engineering sector. LiS does not aim to attract relocations but focuses on expansion driven projects, and areas of strong growth, particulary the automotive components market. Peter Tilling Plastics has opened a second manufacturing unit in Lanarkshire acting as a satellite to its Wembley facility, and T&N automotive components and engineering group plans to invest 18 million pounds sterling on a new production unit at Whitehill, Lothian.

Renold Gears has faced problems during the 1970s and 1980s due to under investment and mis-management, however it has turnover of up to 22 million pounds sterling. The company produced 40,000 gears to 7000 different specifications and is investing in its product ranges. It has increase its output/man by 40% over the past 18 months, attributed to the new pay structure linking wages to productivity. It is aiming to involve the workforce more, by emphasising key events, such as major orders, and production targets. It is introducing three new gearboxes, three major product improvements, seven new couplings and two new variators.

New Internet tools, known as MADE (Manufacturing and Automation Design Engineering), were created to improve the US defense industry's design and manufacturing process. The MADEFAST project was initiated to test the efficiency of the MADE tools by challenging a group of contractors to collaborate and build an optical seeker within six months. The World Wide Web was one of the key tools used by the group which allowed them to access scheduling information, specifications, graphics, animations, and even video.
