New-age politics drives NAFTA
Article Abstract:
The signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between two distinctly different countries, Mexico and the United States, one a democracy and the other a system of one party rule heralds a new age of hybrid politics. Mexico has been known for its protectionist policies and closed economy but it experienced less sentimental and labor opposition to the accord. Meanwhile, the U.S., a foremost proponent of free trade experienced a heated political debate, protest by environmental organizations and unfavorable working class sentiments. Presidents Carlos Salinas de Gotari and Bill Clinton were instrumental in seeing the treaty through.

Rural America online: cable television brings the benefits of broadband telecommunications to rural communities
Article Abstract:
Cable television is bringing significant social and economic benefits to rural communities as regards instant access to news, movies and sports, the opportunity to transact business at home and to communicate with people from other parts of the world. The benefits of cable television are comparable to other systems such as the telephone, direct broadcast satellite and multipoint distribution systems but cable has an unequaled speed and capacity that have the power to deliver superior service. However, economic and technological challenges hinder its delivery to rural America.

NAFTA promises payoff in environmental benefits
Article Abstract:
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will benefit the environment, as it promotes cross-border environmental standards. It promises stricter enforcement of environmental laws and standards. It will also raise money for building the infrastructure necessary to protect and minimize environment damages and for funding of environmental projects. However, Mexico's economic and social disparity with the United States and Canada raises environmental concerns as Mexico may not follow these enforcements strictly.
