New trade winds sweep across North America
Article Abstract:
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has created greater trade opportunities and paved the way for the economic integration of North America, despite fears by critics. One sign of success is the fact that U.S. trade with NAFTA members grew by 17 percent in 1994 compared to the previous year. Total U.S. trade with Canada surged to $243 bil in 1994 while with Mexico to more than $100 bil. NAFTA has also raised questions on how the United States should manage and shape the ongoing economic integration of North America. This process may take considerable time as per capita income in Mexico is way behind U.S.

Casino gambling gaining ground across America
Article Abstract:
Casino gambling has gained official sanction across the US as states feel the pinch of shrinking budgets. This novel way of revenue generation gained its impetus from the growth in Indian reservation gambling during the early 1990s. However, with the increase in compulsive gamblers, critics question the legalization of casino gambling on social and psychological grounds. Despite the immense cost in social terms, legitimizing casino gambling will continue to remain the states' safest means out of their financial straits.

Patterns across the landscape
Article Abstract:
Developmental projects must look beyond short term material gain and take into consideration long term ecological impacts. Land patterns are a result of complex interactions among species and the physical, biological and social forces they exert, which are very susceptible to severity and rapidity of human-induced changes. The construction of High Aswan Dam on the Nile is a case in point. This dam is an ecological mistake, as it seriously destroyed the sardine's habitat, besides reducing the fertility of the area.
