New hope in the minefields
Article Abstract:
There are some 700 models of landmines worldwide which vary in size, shape, and design, making the process of finding and diffusing them difficult. Three demining technologies currently available are the winding magnetometer, the air knife system, and the Lexfoam. Two other technologies with potential use as deminers but still undergoing further R&D make use of nuclear quadrupole resonance imaging and the use of low-energy X-rays for ground imaging. Technological advances in this field would benefit US airports and the US economy in general.

Toward a global ban on landmines
Article Abstract:
The issue of landmines only caught the general public's attention when the US stopped exporting anti-personnel mines. After this move, however, the US initiative seems to have faltered when the White House, in the wake of the Ottawa anti-landmine treaty, stated that it will only totally stop producing and using landmines if China and Russia do the same. Sen Patrick Leahy has been urging the US government to lead the negotiations, and at the same time, to continue supporting efforts to advance demining technology.

Aviation's next great leap
Article Abstract:
The aerospace industry is expected to benefit from the increasing availability of reusable rocket engines. Rocket-powered air- and spacecrafts with rocket propulsion and aviation characteristics are expected to reduce satellite launch costs and lead to ultra-fast package deliveries and hypersonic passenger transport. Pioneer Rocketplane and Kelly Space and Technology are among the aerospace companies that are trying to develop rocket-powered aircraft.
