New intracellular targets for therapeutic drug design
Article Abstract:
Greater understanding of cellular biology has led to new techniques for developing therapeutic drugs. Instead of testing naturally occurring compounds for pharmacological effect, researchers can use the understanding of cellular signaling mechanisms to design drug molecule structures that can modify or inhibit such mechanisms.

Calcium sparks in vascular smooth muscle: relaxation regulators
Article Abstract:
Researchers have found indications of local increases in Ca2 in a single smooth muscle cell that are believed to be responsible for initiating spontaneous transient outward currents (STOCs). The highly localized and brief Ca2 increases likely facilitate the vasodilatation of small cerebral arteries.

A docking receptor for HDL cholesterol Esters
Article Abstract:
Researchers have identified SR-BI as a receptor for HDL that mediates the selective way that HDL delivers its cholesterol esters to cells. In mice, SR-BI is expresses almost exclusively in tissues in which selective uptake of HDL cholesterol has been demonstrated in vivo.
