Food quality implementation plan released
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its implementation plan to meet Food Quality Protection Act requirements. The plan sets the deadlines and methodologies for the EPA's resolution of such major scientific issues as estrogenic compounds, and cumulative and aggregate risks. The Food Quality Protection Act establishes a single standard for pesticide residues on foods. It modifies the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act.

Putting the brakes on clean cars
Article Abstract:
The much-touted low emission vehicles (LEVs), which will be available for sale in northeastern states by the late 1998, might not serve their purpose. The LEVs, which were borne out of a national program that seek to put clean cars on the road, are expected to reduce nitrous oxide by 50% and hydrocarbons by 70%. The high-sulfur content of gasoline commonly sold in the US, however, could damage the advanced catalytic converter used in the LEVs to reduce pollution.
