Folding proteins caught in the act
Article Abstract:
Univ of Illinois researchers have developed the fastest technique to catch the protein-folding process in the act, on time scales of less than one microsecond. The team denatured a protein by supercooling it, then used infrared and ultraviolet lasers to trigger simultaneous folding.

Amino acid alchemy transmutes sheets to coils

A team of biochemical researchers has successfully altered the basic three-dimensional structure of a protein while changing no more than half of its amino acid sequence. They changed a sheetlike protein structure to one with four helical coils.
