New research strategy draws criticism

A committee of French cabinet ministers announced a new policy requiring public research agencies to allocate a certain percentage of their budget for designated priority programs. Researchers would share in profits from patents, as an incentive. Reaction from the science community was mixed.

Midwife to global megaprojects given more time to deliver
Article Abstract:
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has extended the mandate of it's Megascience Forum for an additional three years. The program was founded to facilitate international scientific cooperation, but will also focus on finding solutions for more specific problems.

The World Health Organization (WHO) executive board will choose a new director-general in Jan 1998 to replace Hiroshi Nakajima. The selection will be very important in managing the future direction of WHO's health assistance and international research.
