Physicist Gregory Benford has proposed that a massive effort should be undertaken to preserve species of endangered flora and fauna from threatened regions around the world. He claims that nonspecialists can be inexpensively trained to use liquid nitrogen to preserve specimens for later study.

Genetic research indicates that the red wolf is a hybrid of the gray wolf and the coyote rather than a distinct species. If this finding is confirmed the red wolf may lose its protection under the Endangered Species Act.
