OCEA goes green
Article Abstract:
The nominees for ASCE's Outstanding Civil Engineering Award have sought to answer traditional problems by applying modern, environmentally-friendly techniques. Some examples are the Lake Michigan Water Supply catering to the water demand of Du Page County, the engineers from Metrolink Commuter Rail System completing a 140-mile two-county commuter railroad in 2 years, a Hunting Beach pier built to prevent destructive waves and the Discovery Bridge in Columbus, Ohio, built to replace an old crossing of the Scioto River.

Automating the corps
Article Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers' Southwestern Division Laboratory in Dallas, TX, switched to automated soil testing in 1985 to upgrade its equipment and to minimize the operation's dependence on staff. This major step has greatly simplified what was once a labor-intensive procedure, thereby freeing personnel to do other tasks. It has also produced more precise soil evaluations. The Army invested $200,000 for the soil-test machines but it expects the project to be fully self-liquidating by 1997.

Who's surfing? We're working
Article Abstract:
Industrial designers are starting to use the Internet as a tool for providing a wealth of information to clients. In addition, construction and engineering firms are starting to use the technology to effectively manage both manpower and resources in far-flung areas. Other capabilities offered by the Internet include the sharing of design documents and the embedding of links within Web sites.
