Oak Ridge community shapes DOE's future
Article Abstract:
The Oak Ridge communities' initiative to manage the environment in partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE), shapes the DOE's role by making it responsible and accountable to community needs. The objective of the Oak Ridge Reservation Local Oversight Committee in the joint effort is to involve individuals and groups in decision making, define cleanup priorities, and oversee the restoration process. The Committee which comprises local officials, citizens, and social activists has realized some of its aims including the patronage of community forums and serving on the DOE boards.

Clear priorities should govern national cleanup
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other federal agencies should cooperate with each other in defining priorities for cleaning up hazardous wastes. A consistent approach is necessary to percolate funds to the high priority waste sites. The relative risk factor involved in the clean-up process needs to be included in the list of priorities. However, the comparison of risks nationwide still remains incomplete. The varying methods used by the US Department of Energy and US Department of Defense in comparing risks are impediments to the setting up clear cleanup priorities.

DOE restores trust in post-Cold War era
Article Abstract:
The US Department of Energy (DOE) has gained the people's trust by prioritizing environment, health and safety and by cleaning up contaminated weapons sites. DOE's Environmental Restoration Program has been instrumental in identifying and cleaning up over 130 sites in 33 states of active and inactive nuclear and uranium mining and milling sites. Assessment and evaluation of the sites are the key to the success of this clean-up process. Advisory committees and working groups set up by DOE actively participate in the decision making process of a site cleanup.
