One hundred years of the electron
Article Abstract:
Dr. Johnstone Stoney was the first to use the term electron in 1891 to describe the fundamental unit of electric charge carried by ions in the electrolysis of liquids but he could not prove its existence. It was only in 1897 that J.J. Thompson was able to show experimentally that the 'rays' coming from the cathode in a gaseous discharge tube were negatively-charged particles which he would name as 'corpuscles.' Later, the term electron would be used for these particles.

Single mothers and welfare
Article Abstract:
Though the majority of single mothers have court-ordered child support, less than half receive it. This, coupled with reductions and law changes to welfare, will likely create more homeless families headed by single mothers, despite research showing that welfare helps raise their standard of living.
